Short answer: warm a small amount, massage it into your scalp and lengths, leave it for 1 to 2 hours (or overnight), then shampoo twice. Do this once or twice a week. Patch test first.
Before you start
Castor oil is thick. Many people blend it with a lighter oil or buy a ready blend so it spreads easily. Test a drop on your inner arm and wait 24 hours. Stop if you notice redness, itching or swelling.
Step by step
- Section your hair. Brush out knots, then divide hair into 4 parts.
- Warm the oil. Stand the bottle in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. It should feel warm, not hot.
- Apply to the scalp. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons for short hair and 1 to 2 tablespoons for long hair. Part the hair and apply along the partings with your fingertips.
- Massage for 5 minutes. Use gentle circular motions. Do not scrub or pull.
- Coat the lengths. Smooth any leftover oil over the mid-lengths and ends, which are the driest part.
- Leave it on. 1 to 2 hours is enough for most people. Overnight works if your scalp tolerates it; use a towel on the pillow.
- Wash out. Apply shampoo to dry hair first, then add water and lather. Rinse and repeat. Condition the ends.
How often and for how long
Once or twice a week for 8 to 12 weeks before judging. More often can weigh hair down and clog the scalp.
Who should be careful
- Oily or acne-prone scalp: use less and wash out sooner.
- Seborrheic dermatitis or other scalp conditions: ask a dermatologist first.
- Pregnancy: ask your doctor before using new herbal products.
Cold-pressed vs ordinary castor oil
Cold-pressed means the oil was pressed without added heat or solvents. It is a quality marker, but results still depend on your hair and routine.

FAQs
Can I leave castor oil in overnight?
Many people do. Tie hair loosely, protect your pillow, and wash it out in the morning. If your scalp feels itchy or congested, shorten the time.
How much castor oil should I use?
Start with 1 to 2 teaspoons for short hair and 1 to 2 tablespoons for long hair. Add more only if needed.
Will castor oil make my hair grow?
There is limited scientific evidence. It can help hair feel moisturised and look shinier, which may reduce breakage.
Why is castor oil so sticky?
It is naturally thick. Warming it or choosing a blend with lighter oils makes it easier to spread and wash out.
